How to Feel Prepared for your Teaching Interview

Interview tips | MyNewTerm

Well done! You’ve successfully navigated the application process and now have an invitation to a teaching interview! You know you’ve got the skills and experience. But how do you make sure you stand out from the other candidates?

Do your research

Have a good look at the school/trust website to get an idea of their vision and values. They will be looking for someone who aligns with these. Try and get that across in the panel interview. Have a look at their latest Ofsted report. What is their focus going to be over the coming years? Also, how could you contribute to that? Think about what you can offer. You could also read the educational press to discuss current trends and issues in education.

Prep some examples for interview questions

The questions asked in a teaching interview will vary from school to school. The focus often changes based on current trends in education. One way to prepare is by reflecting on examples from your own teaching practice that can be used to answer a range of different questions. For example, think about challenging situations you have encountered with colleagues and students. Consider also what skills you used to be able to navigate through these.

Make sure you’re ready for your lesson

Almost all teaching interviews will include a short pre-prepared lesson. This will be on a topic you will be given by the school. Make sure you find out the size of the class, and if they have any additional needs. Also, find out whether there will be any additional support. If there is, you will need to think about how to best use those adults. Less is more – keep your lesson simple, make sure you have a clear objective. Think about how you can scaffold or extend the learning. Questioning is key – build in lots of student talk and open-ended questions to assess the learning throughout.

Remember, you are interviewing them too!

As much as you want to get across how perfect you are for the job, don’t forget that you are also interviewing the prospective employer. Is this somewhere you will feel comfortable working? Does it fit with your own vision and values? Prep a few questions you can ask the interviewing panel. If for any reason it’s not the right fit for you, feel free to make your excuses and leave. Additionally, feel confident asking your own questions during the teaching interview.

Make a great first impression

Give yourself plenty of time to travel to the interview to make sure you arrive on time. It’s always a good idea to arrive a few minutes early as this shows your timekeeping skills. This also gives you time to collect your thoughts before the interview starts. Make small talk with the office staff when you arrive. They quite often pass on their thoughts on potential candidates! Most importantly, make sure you smile. It instantly helps people warm to you. This will also make you feel more confident as well.

If you are successful at interview, the offer will usually be made the same day. Make sure to keep your mobile handy!
