Chiltern Learning Trust – how MyNewTerm has reduced recruitment costs

Adrian Rodgers, CEO of Chiltern Learning Trust, explained how moving all advertising over to MyNewTerm has reduced costs across the trust, allowing that money to be spent on the children.

“We were with MyNewTerm from the very early days so we have been on that journey together of improvements. When we first started using MyNewTerm, we had six schools,. They all had very different processes – three of them were new to the trust so they had three completely different processes, we had the same processes for the other three.”

“One frustration was the amount of money that we were spending on recruitment and retention, recruitment in this case in particular, so the bills were huge and the trust had set up accounts with other companies that were ridiculously high. That’s money we should have been spending on the children. Another frustration was that when we had multiple applicants, we weren’t seeing them all centrally so we were losing the second-best candidate at some schools.”

“For me, as a CEO, it has been really good to see an overall picture of the applicants coming in. The feedback we get at the end of our recruitment seasons really helps and gives us an idea of where we are going to market next.”

“For example, we know that members of staff that work within our schools live 4.8 miles from their place of work, that’s the average. That comes through from MyNewTerm so we know that a lot of our advertising has to be very local – that’s been really insightful for us. Also, we are in a very diverse town, it has really helped us target in terms of our diversity. Last year (2022/2023), interestingly, 51% of our applicants were non-white and those figures come out from being able to monitor and target our audience and target our recruitment.”

In our first year, our costs on recruitment fell by £120,000

“So, instead of gold star packages with other companies and other education newspapers, we just use MyNewTerm. We do all in-house marketing as well and worked alongside MyNewTerm and saved £125,000 first year. If you look back on those days now that’s now spent on the children.”

“If we didn’t have MyNewTerm, we would have to have more HR staff. We would have to be much more labour intensive. I think we would be out there looking for a product that matched it. We haven’t seen a product that comes anywhere close to it, not that we are interested in changing. Also, I think our recruitment figures would be way down. We can monitor it centrally as a system, we can then look at multiple applicants for multiple jobs and we can transfer the second, third and fourth best candidates onto our other schools and that has been really positive.”

“The impact of quality of teaching has been immense as well.”

“If anyone is undecided about MyNewTerm, one because of cost, I would be shocked. It is so good value. It is very very cheap compared. We spent £130,000 the year before we used MyNewTerm and it went down to £5,000 – so I think it’s a huge saving. Secondly, just talk with other CEOs that use it. I have never spoken with another CEO that uses it that says ‘no that’s not what we’ve bought into’ or ‘that’s not excellent value’.”
